

WIAA Playoffs: Round One The first round of the WIAA State High School playoffs kicked off last night with 56 teams in action across the state. Here are some statewide previews and post game reports. #9 Baldwin-Woodville vs #8 Somerset #11 Barron Co-op vs #6 WSFLG Post Game: WSFLG beats Barron 10-1. Joe Englehart scored two goals and added four assists, Anthony Dietmeier had a hat trick and two assists and Aaron Dietmeier score two goals and assisted on three of them. #10 Spooner vs #7 Amery Preview: After last season’s fantastic freshman campaign, Amery forward Jake Mullendore picked up right where he left by scoring 30 of the teams 74 goals this season. #9 Ashland vs #8 McDonell Central Post Game: McDonnell Central slips past Ashland 2-1. #11 Medford vs #6 Hayward Post Game: Hayward beats Medford 10-1. #10 Eau Claire North vs #7 Altoona Post Game: Altoona wins 5-1 over Eau Claire North. #9 Antigo vs #8 Lakeland Look for a heavy dose of Lakeland standouts Bruno Borowczyk, Jared Dern, AJ Oungst and Jared Suter while defending their home turf. #12 Merrill vs #5 D.C. Everest #11 Pacelli vs #6 Mosinee Post Game: Mosinee topples Pacelli 6-0. Mosinee goaltender Wade Michalski stopped all 28 Pacelli shots to earn a shutout in the win. Kamen Klasinski and his Pacelli Cardinals have had their struggles as well, finishing 8-13-0. However, the Cardinals have won two of their last three and have shown some progress down the home stretch. #10 Rhinelander vs #7 Stevens Point Post Game: Stevens Point routed Rhinelander 10-1.

Sectional One
Top Seed: Superior - The Spartans have been to the WIAA State Hockey Tournament 32 times, a state record that can’t be touched. The Spartans are offensively charged and led by forwards Nolan Holcombe and Daniel Litchke.
Post Game: Somerset knocks off Baldwin-Woodville 8-5. Somerset's Adam McMurray had four goals and three assists on the night. Robbie Flom also added a goal and four assists.
Preview: Senior Nick Coltrain and his BW Blackhawks march into Somerset looking to extend their season past the first round of the playoffs. Coltrain, who has 27 goals and 19 assists on the season, is one of the state’s best kept secrets. He has decent size, a nice set of hands and he’s a solid skater. His ’93 birth date makes him an interesting project.
Preview: WSFLG and their 19-4-1 record, created a bit of a buzz around the state this season. However, playoff time is when this squad can make some real noise.
Post Game: Amery downed Spooner 8-1.
Sectional Two
Top Seed: Eau Claire Memorial - The Old Abes have been ranked number one all season and are a heavy favorite to win the state title in 2011. Loaded with talent, led by goaltender Saxton Soley and forward Alexander Dahl, the Old Abes are poised, disciplined and on a mission.
Preview: Ashland travels to Eau Claire to take on Marco Ortiz and his RMB Macks.
Preview: “We are giving a lot of kids a chance at some varsity experience rather than using a short bench,” said Hayward Head Coach, Steve Kirley in an interview back in December. Kirley and his young Hurricanes have a bright future. They had a tough schedule this season and earned a six seed with that game plan.
Preview: These two squads met back on January 25, 2011 with Altoona coming out on top 3-0. Junior goaltender, Drew Magur stopped all 24 of Eau Claire North’s shots that night and earned his third shutout on the season for Altoona.
Sectional Three
Top Seed: Wausau West - After an incredible run to the title game last season, the Wausau Warriors find themselves back in pole position and ready for another playoff push. The Warriors, who have an almost perfect record, are led by offensive juggernauts Kyle Lee and Garret Clemment.
Post Game: Antigo's Kyle Geiger scores two goals and added an assist to upset Lakeland on the road 6-5. Lakeland's Jared Dern and Bruno Borowczyk each had two goals a piece, while AJ Oungst had one himself in a losing effort.
Preview: Kyle Geiger leads his Antigo Red Robins into Lakeland, looking to knock off the Thunderbirds for the first time this season. During their two conference match ups earlier this year, Lakeland came out on top in both.
Post Game: D.C. Everest thumps Merrill 10-1.
Preview: D.C. Everest went 6-6-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season, beat Merrill twice while outscoring them 17-1 in the process.
Preview: Mosinee has gone 1-8-1 over their last 10 games after starting out red hot. That was the regular season, this is the second season, where everyone starts out winless.
Preview: The SPASH Panthers take on the Hodags tonight at the Willet. The Panthers are led by speedster Max Seiter who notched 16 goals and 8 assists during the regular season.
Sectional Four
Top Seed: Onalaska - Onalaska has been on cruise control all season long and has been passing by sectional opponents along the way. The Hilltoppers are led offensively by Jesse Tredinnick, Gabe Flood, Randy Burkhardt, Keaton Brontson and defensively by goaltenders Scott Sibik and Noah White.
#9 Black River Falls vs #8 Sauk Prairie
Post Game: Sauk Prairie's Dan Brennan and Austin Fecht each scored twice and added an assist in a 6-3 win.
#11 Viroqua vs #6 Baraboo
Post Game: Baraboo got goals from five different players to knock off Viroqua 5-0. The Boo's Tyler Newby earned the shutout by stopping all 22 shots in the contest.
#10 Lacrosse vs #7 Wisconsin Rapids
Post Game: Wisconsin Rapids beats Lacrosse 5-1.
Sectional Five
Top Seed: Notre Dame - The Tritons are peaking at the right time heading into playoffs. After a great playoff run last season that ended at the state tournament, the Tritons are playing their best hockey during the season’s home stretch and are looking to finish strong.

Post Game: Oshkosh downs Fox Cities 8-5.
#12 Shawano vs #5 Waupaca
Post Game: Waupaca tallies seven goals in a 7-0 shutout over Shawano.
#11 Manitowoc vs #6 Bay Port
Post Game: Bay Port beats Manitowoc 9-1.
#10 De Pere vs #7 Neenah
Post Game: Neenah blanks De Pere 4-0.
Sectional Six
Top Seed: Middleton - The Middleton Cardinals have depth, an explosive offense and are back stopped by arguably the state’s best goaltender in Eric Smith. That recipe has led to a successful season for the Cardinals that could be capped off with their first trip to the state tournament in five years.

#12 Madison Memorial vs #5 Oregon
Post Game: Oregon doubles up Madison Memorial 6-3.

Post Game: Madison West slipped past Sun Prairie 4-3.
Sectional Seven
Top Seed: Marquette - Marquette hasn’t missed a beat since the first weekend of the season. They are “big game” tested and a have been fixture in the top ten power rankings the entire year. The Hilltoppers have a bundle of young talent led by junior forward Joe Llaurado.

Top Seed: University School - The defending state champions have several incredible memories from last year’s title run. Those types of images may be enough to motivate and propel the Wildcats back to Madison for a shot at back to back championships.
