In the first round of the “Showdown in Titletown”, the Edgewood Crusaders used three, third period goals, to propel past tenth ranked Catholic Memorial 5-2 last night at the Madison Ice Arena.

Edgewood senior, Chris Beglinger, scored twice and added an assist to lead the Crusaders to the win.  Junior, Zach Zanoya, scored twice and senior Kody Parman also added a goal in the contest.  With the win, Edgewood is now 11-5-1 and are unbeaten in their last five games.

The Crusaders are on a role and they are looking like they’re back to top ten form.  They have outscored their opponents 11-4 in the third period over the past four games and appear to be deep on the bench and well coached.  The teams they’ll face this weekend will be a great benchmark as to where the team ranks against the state’s stiffest competition.

Catholic Memorial, on the other hand, might be heading in the opposite direction.  Last night, the team struggled late in the game with Edgewood’s power play and they lacked consistent play in their defensive end.

One has to look no further then the absence of Cody Dixon, Catholic Memorial’s senior defenseman and the team’s leading scorer, for the third period breakdowns.

Dixon, a sure fire “Mr. Hockey” candidate and a Junior A prospect, logs major minutes for Catholic Memorial and is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Sources say Dixon may be on the shelf for awhile, which is a huge loss for Catholic Memorial, who has now lost two of their last three games.

With the loss of Dixon, Catholic Memorial will have to dig deep this weekend and understudies will have to try to fill the void left by Dixon.

That is easier said then done, considering Dixon anchored the power play, penalty kill and played over 40 minutes a game.

The first round of the “Showdown in Titletown” continues tonight when Superior travels to Wausau West and Eau Claire Memorial plays tournament host, Notre Dame Academy at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Edgewood
will face the winner of tonight’s Wausau West/Superior game, while Catholic Memorial awaits the loser from that tilt.

Both games will be played tomorrow at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
